As a family photographer in Connecticut, I've learned that summer isn't just about capturing memories—it's about making them too. That's why I'm a firm believer in taking time off during these sunny months. It's crucial for our mental health and for strengthening bonds with our children.

Let's face it, when we're knee-deep in running our business, we sometimes forget to take a breather. But stepping away from the camera isn't just a break - it's like hitting the refresh button on our creative vision. And you know what's even better? It gives us precious, uninterrupted time with our little ones during their most exciting, adventurous phase. Trust me, it's worth it for both our work and our family.

For those looking to make the most of summer in Connecticut with young kids, here are five summer outdoor activities I highly recommend -

1. Enjoying Harkness Memorial State Park:

Picture this: gorgeous gardens, plenty of space for the kiddos to run wild, and a beautiful beach all in one spot! It's perfect for a family day out. Pack a picnic, explore the fancy Eolia Mansion (hello, impromptu history lesson!), and soak in those Long Island Sound views. We had a blast here - the kids burned off energy while we actually got to relax a bit. It's a total win for the whole family!

2. Exploring Mystic Aquarium:

Mamas, let me tell you about Mystic Aquarium - it's a total hit with the kiddos! Think of it as an underwater adventure without getting wet. The little ones can get hands-on with touch tanks (cue the squeals!), gawk at cool sea critters, and soak up ocean facts without even realizing they're learning. I'm not gonna lie, seeing my kids' faces light up like Christmas trees when they spotted those cute little penguins or beluga whales? Absolutely priceless! It's one of those outings where everyone has a blast, and you get to feel like super-mom for sneaking in some education. Trust me, it's a day trip that'll make a splash with your crew!

3. Pick Your Own Fruit at Lyman Orchards

At the beginning of summer, we always kick things off with strawberry picking. There's nothing like the taste of fresh fruit you've picked yourself, right? Lyman Orchards is our go-to spot for picking all kinds of yummy fruits throughout the summer. Right now, blueberries, peaches, and nectarines are in season, so it’s the perfect time to grab some before the season ends. Blueberries will be around until mid-August, while peaches and nectarines will keep going into late September. It’s such a fun way to teach the kids about where our food comes from and enjoy some sweet treats together. Plus, the sunflower maze is open now, offering a beautiful setting to explore with the family.

4. Visiting Flamig Farm:

If you're looking for a fun summer outing with the kids, Flamig Farm in West Simsbury is a must-visit! It’s one of those places where you can let your little ones run free and truly soak up the simple joys of farm life. The kids will love getting up close with the animals—feeding the goats, petting the sheep, and maybe even taking a pony ride. The iconic backward "EGG" sign is a cute spot for those Instagram-worthy moments, and it’s a great way to spend a sunny afternoon outdoors. Plus, it’s a chance for your kids to learn about animals and nature while having a blast.

5. Fishing and Walking Trails at Local Parks:

Many parks in Connecticut offer both fishing opportunities and scenic walking trails. You can enjoy a peaceful day fishing at various town parks with stocked ponds, and then explore nearby walking trails for a bit of hiking. One of our favorite walking trails is along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail which is paved walkway great for walking, bicycling or scootering!

Mental Health and Quality Family Time

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the constant hustle and bustle, especially with the added pressure of social media. Stepping away from it all can be incredibly refreshing. For me, this break meant disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with what truly matters—my family.

Quality time with our children is not just about being physically present but also about being mentally and emotionally available. When we're constantly stressed and overwhelmed, it's challenging to give our kids the attention and love they need. Taking time off helps reduce stress, rejuvenates our minds, and allows us to be more present and engaged parents.

Taking a little time off this summer was one of the best decisions I made for both my mental health and my family. It allowed me to recharge, reconnect, and create lasting memories with my kids. As we gear up for the busy fall season, I feel more energized and ready to capture beautiful moments for my clients.

Remember, it's essential to find balance in our lives and prioritize what truly matters. Whether it's taking a short break or planning regular family activities, these moments are invaluable for our well-being and our children's happiness.

As we move into the busy months ahead, I encourage all parents to take time for themselves and their families. The memories we create with our loved ones are the ones that will last a lifetime. Here's to a fantastic fall season filled with love, laughter, and beautiful moments.
